Auto-immune diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines etc.)
Our immune system is designed to identify and kill anything that is considered as “foreign” to our body. This plays a very crucial role in preserving the body against invading organism. In auto-immunity, the body starts fighting against its own tissues thereby destroying it.
Cancer and Chemotherapy
One of the major uses of medical cannabis in the US is cancer related pain and chemotherapy related side-effects. Those on medical cannabis show better tolerance to chemotherapy. Studies have shown that cannabis significantly reduces chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).
Diabetes and diabetic complications (neuropathy, retinopathy)
For all practical purposes, there are two types of diabetes (type-1 and type-2). Type 1 is a condition where pancreatic cells are destroyed (due to auto-immune reaction) and insulin cannot be produced. Such patients have to be on insulin life-long.
Gastrointestinal diseases: IBS
ECS and cannabinoids modulate the GIT through CB1 and CB2 receptors and via other pathways. In the Gastrointestinal system (GIT), it modulates peristalsis (intestinal movement), secretions, inflammation and pain. It also modulates appetite and energy utilization (metabolism).
Pain: chronic/ acute pain
One of the major symptoms that cannabis (smoking or the oral) is used worldwide in treating "chronic pain". Cannabinoids (via ECS and other pathways) modulate pain-perception and heal tissue injury. There are 3 types of pain: Nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain and central pain.
